THE
HISTORY
of the RONDINAUD family is intrinsically
linked to that of the Charentaise
slipper, now sold all
over the world, the slippers originated
in Angoulême
in the Charente region
of France during the reign of
Louis
XIV. At that time the city
specialized in the manufacture
of felt
for the uniforms of the
Royal Navy. Cobblers collected
the off-cuts and rejects to make
slippers with woollen
uppers and felt soles.
For maximum usage the slippers
had neither left nor right feet. |

The Charentaise
was to undergo many changes over
the centuries before
being taken up by the RONDINAUD
family at the beginning of the
1900s in Rochefoucauld
where they have been established
for many generations carrying the
regional tradition of
shoemaking. |
